Chapter 6

New News Is Bad News

That evening at the Bear family’s tree house, Brother Bear was very quiet all through dinner. When Papa asked him how things had gone at school, he just mumbled, “Okay.” He didn’t even look up. It was pretty clear to Mama that Brother had something on his mind.

Later the cubs sat on the sofa in the living room watching the news on TV. They weren’t really paying attention, though. Both were thinking hard, especially Brother. To tell or not to tell? That was the question.

Mama came quietly into the living room and switched off the TV. Sister knew why right away. Mama knew that something was troubling Brother. Now she was going to ask him about it. And no matter how embarrassed Brother was, he was going to tell her the whole story. That was what always happened.

“Well, I guess it’s time to start my homework,” said Sister. She headed upstairs.

Brother was so upset that he hadn’t even noticed that the TV was off or that Sister had left.

“Brother?” said Mama gently.

Brother looked up in a daze. “Huh? What?”

“I know something is bothering you,” said Mama. “Seems like something pretty serious. Would you like to tell me about it?”

Brother sighed. It was all so embarrassing. He couldn’t stand the thought of his parents knowing. On the other hand, keeping it a secret from them was wearing him out. Before he knew it, he was telling Mama the whole story of Operation Substitute and the frog prank.

“Well,” said Mama when Brother had finished. “That’s quite a story. It sounds as though you’ve been trying too hard to make the wrong people like you.”

Brother nodded. “Not anymore, though,” he said. “I quit Operation Substitute this afternoon. So did Cousin Freddy. I think it’s over anyway. Not even Too-Tall would want to push Ms. Barr any further.”
